About the research group

Our research group conducts research in the fields of paediatric nursing and care and e-health, with a focus on children with long-term medical conditions and their families, e.g. children with cancer, cerebral palsy, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, obesity and colic. The research is conducted in close collaboration with healthcare services.

Child and family needs

Our focus is on the needs of children and families and how they participate in care and decisions when a child is ill. We focus on transitions in pediatric care, for example to home care and how the family can be supported with the help of various e-health interventions. We also focus on measures that prevent ill health in the family and interventions that support and develop the child's and family's health, for example in areas such as obesity and physical activity. The research generates knowledge about the whole family when a child in the family becomes chronically ill, how care and treatment affect the family's daily life and what effects it has over time.

Practical significance

The research, implementation of research results in practical health care and evaluation of this has proven to be of great importance for children and their families' opportunities to live with illness or ill health. It has also become important for health care organizations that can provide better care without increasing health care costs or costs for the family.

E-health

Since 2018, we have been developing pediatric care with the support of e-health in the 6-year research program eChildHealth, which is funded by Forte. We investigate how different e-health applications can facilitate communication between healthcare professionals and family when a child with a long-term illness leaves the hospital. The research is a continuation of the 6-year research program LUC3 (2013-2018) with a focus on parental support and child-centered care.

Multidisciplinary research team

We work multidisciplinary and have both a national and an international perspective. Pediatric nurses and other nurses, physiotherapists, doctors and researchers in public health science and global health participate in the research. Ethnologists, technologists and health economists are also linked to the research group.

Education

Our research group are involved in educational initiatives on both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels within the field of health science.  We also conduct postgraduate education, participate in commissioned education and are involved in pedagogical education within the framework of the Faculty of Medicine.

Funding

The research is funded by Forte (Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare), the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation, SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency), The Swedish Diabetes Foundation, The Swedish Child Diabetes Foundation, Region Skåne and various research foundations such as The Crafoord Foundation, Ekhaga Foundation, Linnea & Josef Carlssons Foundation, Fanny Ekdahls Foundation, RBU 's Research Foundation and Mjölkdroppen Foundation.
