Doctoral student Angela Afua Quaye and supervisor Inger Kristensson Hallström from the research group Child and Family Health have received 1 million SEK from Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund, for research on child-centered care.

The research project has its background in the Swedish Patient Act which emphasizes that when care is given to children, it should be given based on the best interests of the child.

The first study “Children's active participation in decision‐making processes during hospitalisation: An observational study” was published in "Journal of Clinical Nursing" in the fall of 2019. The authors is, in addition to Angela Afua Quaye and Inger Kristensson Hallström, also Imelda Coyne and Maja Söderbäck.

Despite active participation being a fundamental right for children, they are not always involved in decision‐making processes during their health care. There is a need for awareness creation to help healthcare professionals facilitate children's active participation in their care and decisionmaking, the researchers write.

The study is funded by Forte - Swedish research council for health working life and welfare.
