The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, or UNCRC, is a human rights treaty which sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children. From January 1, 2020, the UNCRC is Swedish law.
Inger Kristensson Hallström, professor of pediatric nursing with over 20 years of experience in research in pediatric care, shares her view on the new law in an article in the Swedish magazine Vårdfokus.
– The best interests of the child are not always about asking what they want, it is a misunderstanding. It's about always involving the child and finding solutions that are good for the child, says Inger Kristensson Hallström.
Together with doctoral student Angela Afua Quaye and researchers Imelda Coyne and Maja Söderbäck, Inger Kristensson Hallström leads a research project on child-centered care. The first study "Children's active participation in decision-making processes during hospitalization: An observational study" was published in "Journal of Clinical Nursing" in the fall of 2019.
